Why plain Markdown
Most template galleries give you a page that only works inside one product, or a Word file you have to reformat. A Markdown file works everywhere: GitHub and GitLab render it, Obsidian and VS Code open it, and every wiki that reads Markdown can take it. It also lives in version control, so the template and every document made from it keep a history, a diff and an author.
The templates here are written to be used, not admired. Each one puts the part people look for first at the top (decisions in meeting notes, impact in a postmortem, the trigger in a runbook), marks every placeholder in {{double braces}} so it is easy to find, and uses italic lines to say what belongs in a section. Delete the hint lines once the section is filled in.
How to use a template
Open the one you need, check the preview, then press Copy or Download. Paste it where the document should live, search for {{ to find every placeholder, fill them in and delete the hints. For documents you write more than once, such as meeting notes or release notes, keep a clean copy of the template next to the finished ones and start each new document from it.
Every template page also gives three short steps, what makes that kind of document good, and answers to the questions people ask most. We keep the wording short on purpose: a template that needs a manual is not doing its job.
Confluence templates in Markdown
If you came looking for Confluence templates, note the difference. A Confluence template is a page layout stored inside Confluence, and it stays there. The templates on this site are plain Markdown files, so they work in a repository, in Obsidian, in any wiki that reads Markdown, and they do not depend on a plugin or an account.
Going the other way, if your existing pages are in Confluence, the free Confluence to Markdown converter turns a page into Markdown in your browser without uploading it. Convert a page you already have, then reuse its structure with one of these templates or save it as a template of your own.
Free to use, no attribution required
Everything on these pages is released under CC0 1.0: copy it, change it, put it into your company wiki or your product, and you do not need to credit us or ask. A link back is welcome but never required.
Folio is an open-source wiki that stores pages as Markdown files in Git. A template here is a normal Folio page: put the file in a space's template folder and create each new document from it. Every template page has an Open in Folio demo button that shows the page rendered in the demo wiki.
Questions
- Are these templates really free?
- Yes. They are released under CC0 1.0, there is no sign-up and no attribution is required. Use them at work, change them and share them.
- Can I use them in Confluence, Notion or Google Docs?
- Anywhere that accepts Markdown or plain text. Paste the template and check that tables and checkboxes survive in your editor. The Mermaid diagrams in the SOP, PRD, runbook and postmortem templates are code blocks, and they only turn into pictures where the tool renders Mermaid.
- What do the {{double braces}} mean?
- They mark a placeholder you replace with your own text. Search the file for {{ to find every one, and delete the italic hint lines when you are done.
