Folio vs. Miro
Folio does not replace Miro for every workshop. It replaces a workflow where the board, wiki and Git remain separate sources and the team maintains links between them. Miro is stronger for large-canvas workshops, facilitation and specialized visual collaboration.
The workflow difference
A Folio Excalidraw board lives beside ADRs and release plans, embeds into documents, and syncs as an editable .excalidraw.svg file.
Synchronized versions remain in Git history. Folio does not turn every keystroke into a commit.
Side by side
| Area | Folio | Miro |

| Product center | Wiki, repository and related visual work | Visual collaboration and facilitation |
| Board format | Editable .excalidraw.svg in Git | Miro board with supported exports and backups |
| Collaboration | Real-time editing inside a team wiki | Specialized large-canvas collaboration |
| History | Synchronized versions in Git history | Board activity and version history by plan |
| Restore | Restore or revert through Git workflows | Restore a saved version as a separate board |
| Documents | Boards embed beside Markdown documents | Boards can contain and link supporting content |
| Tables | Typed Markdown-backed data tables and forms | Visual tables and structured board widgets |
| Agents | Agents can create a first board through MCP | Miro AI and platform integrations |
| External access | Page and subtree sharing within Folio permissions | Mature guest and public board sharing |
What Folio changes
- The board, related documents and structured data share one page tree.
- The SVG opens normally and its embedded scene can be edited again in Excalidraw.
- Agents can create a first board through MCP.
- There is no editable Miro importer.
Where Folio is the better choice
Choose Folio when the board should live beside the documents and decisions it belongs to. A Folio Excalidraw board syncs as an editable .excalidraw.svg in Git, restores through normal Git workflows, embeds next to ADRs and release plans, and agents can draft the first board through MCP. Visual work stays with the code and the docs instead of living in a separate tool.
Try it with one real workflow
- Pick one architecture or release-planning board.
- Recreate only the part that belongs beside durable documentation.
- Embed the board in one Folio page.
- Sync it and open the .excalidraw.svg outside Folio.
- Decide whether workshop work should remain in Miro or move with the docs.
